NO.1 BRUNEL SQUARE

Formerly the Maritime Heritage Centre, No 1 Brunel Square has been transformed from an unused red brick museum shed into a contemporary conference and education facility, and headquarters of the SS Great Britain Trust. The interior design of the main spaces draws from the Trust's corporate branding of red, white and grey.

Extensive alterations to the internal space were required to extend the mezzanine floor to create more office space – this needed to be acoustically separated from the main conference/exhibition space.

The external appearance of the building has been updated and matched to the other new buildings around the old dockyard by over cladding with larch and refurbishing the windows and doors, including a fully glazed shutter door which can be opened up to allow for large museum exhibits to be brought into the main space.

The environmental performance of the building has been greatly improved through added insulation, improving natural ventilation and efficient new heating and mechanical ventilation systems.
